Join our member Elize de Beer in creating your own Drum Leaf Bound Artist book. The drum leaf binding is a perfect structure for artists who want to present visual narratives with no sewing thread to interrupt the flow of imagery. The binding opens flat and allows for a lot of creative freedom when covering the book. It can be constructed quickly, lends itself to edition work, and can be made in a sparsely equipped home studio. We will be paring the drum leaf binding with a pop-up spine seen in sewn board binding.
All tools will be provided along with the main structural materials to create your book. To make your artist book unique to your practice, please bring the following materials to the workshop:
- Inside Pages – 4 to10 sheets of paper that can be drawings, prints or photographers. Ideally for the paper to be between 170 – 300gsm paper. Just make sure that the information on the sheets of paper are singled sided. And note that the sheet of paper will be folded in half. Sheets of paper can be any size below A3.
- Endsheets – 2 sheets of 170-300gsm paper (can be same paper as inside pages or a coloured card). There will also be a range of papers to choose from at the workshop.
- Cover Paper – 2 sheets of paper 120 -200 gsm for the cover. (These can be decorative sheets of paper, drawings or plain coloured paper.)
Please note that these sheets of paper should all be the same size. The final size of the book will be half the size of the sheets of paper you bring. For example, if you have A4 sheets of paper, your final book will be an A5. Leading up to the workshop, Elize will be able to assist with any questions regarding the papers needed for the workshop. No previous bookbinding experience needed.
