‘Róisín’ – Elinor O’Donovan, Sample-Studios Spike Island Summer Resident Film Screening

Sample-Studios and Triskel Arts Centre host a preview of a new film by Elinor O’Donovan, Róisín, on 6 October 2026 at 2pm. This preview takes place in advance of O’Donovan’s exhibition of the same name, which opens in Sample-Studios Gallery: The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion on 10 October 2026, following the Sample-Studios Spike Island Summer Residency 2026.

Róisín explores the life of Charlotte Grace O’Brien (1845–1909), O’Donovan’s great-great-great-great aunt. O’Brien was a writer, activist and plant collector who worked on behalf of Irish women emigrating to the United States in the late nineteenth century, campaigning against the conditions they experienced in Queenstown, now Cobh, aboard ships and upon their arrival in New York. O’Donovan’s enquiry took her from Cobh to Dublin, Limerick and New York through archives, libraries, botanical collections and places connected to O’Brien.

Róisín takes the form of a ‘desktop documentary’. The film evolves through a voice-over based on a script written by O’Donovan, illustrated by browser windows showing archival materials and photographs, digital drawings and footage shot in Cobh and New York. It recreates fragments of O’Brien’s story through O’Donovan’s research and personal insights into her journey.

This screening is followed by a Q&A between O’Donovan and Miguel Amado, Director of Sirius Arts Centre and the exhibition’s curator.

The Sample-Studios Spike Island Summer Residency is delivered in partnership with Spike Island and Sirius Arts Centre. This initiative is supported by the Arts Council.
