Sample-Studios invites submissions of proposals from our members’ for residency and exhibitions in the 2025-7 Programme in TRISKEL SAMPLE Project Space. TRISKEL SAMPLE Project Space is a partnership between Triskel Arts Centre and Sample-Studios, one of Ireland’s largest artist studios. This space provides a visual arts developmental project space for artists to test ideas, develop new work, experiment and take risks within a hybrid workspace/public space. This open call aims  to enable our members to pursue ambitious lines of enquiry within their practice, engage new audiences with their work, respond imaginatively to the context of the Triskel Sample Project Space, increase visibility of Sample-Studios’ members locally and nationally and offer members a meaningful platform for the development of their practice.

Members are invited to submit proposals in respect of a 4-week residency in TRISKEL SAMPLE Project Space followed by a 1-week exhibition install of their exhibition and 4-week-long run of their exhibition. Members must be prepared to use the space a minimum of 3 days per week during the residency period. Participating artists will receive a fee.

Submissions will be assessed in terms of track record, ambition, feasibility, suitability to the venue, alignment with Sample-Studios and Triskel Arts Centre’s  goals of increasing its visibility within the cultural and wider community locally and nationally. Applications should made in one pdf document  and be emailed to  development@sample-studios.com with your name and ‘TRISKEL SAMPLE Project Space Application’ in the subject line.  Submissions must include:

If you have a query, contact: director@sample-studios.com

Queries that are received from members will be published anonymously along with their answers, in the interests of fairness and transparency:

1-  Is it the Triskel small gallery room only that is available or we can propose the corridor galleries too?
Answer: The proposals are just in relation to what we call the TRISKEL SAMPLE Project Space – the gallery space on the first floor only. The corridors are not available as part of this.
2- Can i have more details on residency? Such as space, objective, facilities, dry/wet work residency and what kind of projects can be proposed?
Answer: The space is the space as you see it. There is no additional equipment or facilities other than a table and chairs. You can use any materials, so long as they don’t include spray paint/toxic/overly smelly materials as you have to keep in mind that staff and public have access. The objectives and what kinds of projects are for you to articulate in your proposal.
3- Artists have to apply for both presidency and exhibition or they are 2 separate things?
Answer: It has to be both – a residency period of a month followed by an exhibition of a month or, if that format differs in your proposal, there has to be an articulated rationale for this. The applicant has to be in a position to undertake a residency. Not all the exhibited work has to be made on residency, but it can’t just be an exhibition proposal.
4- Can someone run short/extended workshops during residency?
Answer: Certainly. Within the confines of the space which is 10 people max typically for workshops
5- As it’s a public space, are there restrictions to take into account? For example, can one use oil paints in this space?
Answer: Oil paints are permissible in the space but not oily rags left. There are restrictions on spray paint and we can’t screw things into the floor. Resident artists have to be mindful that it’s a working space, as well as a public space, and access to the offices is via the ramp in this space.
6 – Would it be possible to leave work and equipment in the room overnight or over weekends, or should the room be cleared daily?
Answer: There are security cameras in the space but it can’t be locked so there is a large locker in the space for equipment overnight. The extent to which residents want to clear out work daily or leave work in progress for visitors to view is up to them.
