Annie Mar is an artist and illustrator based in Cork City. She produces commissioned illustrations and animations, facilitates workshops and has her own artistic practice. Annie collaborates regularly with animator Aaron Ross on a diverse range of projects, always with an ecological focus. Most recently, they completed a three-part fully illustrated animation series for the Irish Parks and Wildlife Service on Irish peatlands. Annie and Aaron collaborate frequently with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) on their Untangled video series.
These animation projects, combined with collective pressures of the everyday and autobiography, feed directly into Annie’s personal practice, where you will find fire, fury and fantasy. Her drawing focuses on everyday preoccupations rendered through a dreamlike lens, executed with paints and pencils. The work confronts feelings of panic and dread with humour, lifted by moments of wonder and the comfort of nature. Annie’s process is enriched by the action of visual diarykeeping, where daily events are woven through with apocalyptic scenes. These diaries are shared in her blog and newsletter.
A devoted zinester, Annie curates Cork Zine Fest every year with three other passionate zine enthusiasts. She shares a studio at the Living Commons in Cork City. An Agility Award in 2021 funded an illustration residency in Hasselt, Belgium with comic artist Brecht Evens.
