As a retired physics lecturer Anthony Murphy’s art practice lies at the interface between art and science, in which he combines an emphasis on painting with his physics background and a personal interest in queer identity issues (reflecting the diversity of colours in the spectrum of white light). A particular interest of his is in the experience of scientific discovery and research into the nature of optical phenomena. In his work he is keen to explore and close the perceived divide between science & technology, and art & the humanities. In fact, he was awarded a Thomas Dammann Award in 2021 to pursue research from an artistic viewpoint into future space projects of the European Space Agency (ESA) and visited the ESA technology centre (ESTEC) in the Netherlands in October 2021. Currently he is pursuing the MFA in Fine Art at the National College of Art and Design (2022-23). As well as being an associate member of Sample Studios, he is also a member of the Plexus Collective.
