I make work that is primarily lens-based with outcomes in printmaking, sculptural forms, textiles, video and installation. Recent Arts council funding enabled me to refresh and expand my practise, bringing my work to the next stage. The influence of vernacular material cultures has become intrinsic to my work. I employ the traditions of repurposing and ‘making do’ which I like to combine with the tactile elements of folk art and the visuals of folk drama. I use repurposed timber, oats sheaves, church kneelers, shells, and vintage fabrics.
Re-evaluating themes of identity and belonging through our contested historical relationship with land are the motivational forces underpinning my work. I explore a culture clash of history, custom and ethno cultural notions. Recent work has examined the overlooked folk customs of the Southern Irish Protestant, a tradition that I grew up within. My photographic documentation of the harvest thanksgiving custom is now archived in the National Folklore Collection, UCD. My recent solo exhibitions at Source Arts Centre and the Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre further examine issues of colonial shame, legacy, and historical gaps.
