Fiona Boniwell is a visual artist and art workshop facilitator based in Cork, Ireland. Originally from London, she studied Art at Blackheath School of Art, moving on to attain a BA in Fine Art – Multimedia from Kingston University, UK. Fiona relocated to Ireland in 2006 and has developed her visual art practice, influenced heavily by the rich contrast between her urban upbringing and coastal home.
Her art practice centres on Drawing, both as a means of enquiry and an end in itself. Equally comfortable working to large or small scale, in digital or traditional media, she is continually pushing the boundaries of what drawing can be. Having created digital drawings for various forms of print, she is currently developing her work for render in perforated metal. Inspired by themes of movement, energy, identity and history; her work is characterised by dynamic mark-making with a strong sense of form and high-contrast, expressive imagery.
Her work has been included in group exhibitions and she has contributed to a number of publications and commercial projects since establishing herself in Cork, notably indie comic collaborations with Brendan O’Connell, Death’s New Lease on Life and Cerberus’ New Trick, both of which won the CAP4Indies award for best book in their respective categories. In 2024, Fiona was awarded the Arts Council Agility Award in support of work for her first solo show presented by Sample-studios in May 2025, Running to a Pause at The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion.
Sharing her passion for making is an important aspect of Fiona’s practice. She is an experienced art workshop facilitator, particularly in the areas of drawing and comic process. She has delivered workshops of varying length to audiences of all ages and abilities—online and in-person—on behalf of local authorities, schools and art centres including, Sample-studios, Cork County Arts & Library Service, and Nerve Centre in Derry.
