Lily O’ Shea

About the member

Lily O’Shea is a visual artist based in Ireland who recently graduated with a BA Hons in Fine Art from Crawford College of Art and Design. Lily’s work is concerned with political questions surrounding the contemporary labourer. This practice involves sculpture, performance, and film, as well as different forms of writing and publishing in varied contexts.
Recent group exhibitions include Rhetoric, Crawford College of Art and Design Online Degree Showcase, Cork (2020), Villa the End, Berlin Gallery Weekend, Charlottenburg, Berlin (2019), Art(ist) Film, The Gate Cinema, Indie Film Festival, Cork (2019). After graduating, Lily was awarded the Material Store Graduate Residency from Crawford College of Art and Design, MART Award Winner 2020 from Mart Gallery Studios (Dublin), Highest Thesis Award from Crawford College of Art and Design (Cork) and the Bloomers Writing Award 2020 from Bloomers Magazine (Cork). Lily is currently an artist-in-residence in The Guesthouse Project as part of the INHOUSE Initiative Award 2020 while also undertaking an Associate Membership which was awarded by Sample-Studios/TACTIC Visual Arts Programme.

The work utilises performance, sculpture, and text to interrogate questions surrounding the contemporary labourer. The adoption of methods such as appropriation and assemblage seek to examine changes occurring in workers’ labour processes. The term ‘precarity’ is integral to the work, this refers to all forms of flexible, contingent, and insecure employment. It focuses on managerial practice and project work in order to assess issues concerning the omnipresence of public relations in which symbols of productivity, the performance of engagement and coerced self-realisation have taken precedence.
