Padraig Dennan is a sculptor. Through their installations they explore the relationships between architecture, history and functions of public toilets as queer space in relation to cruising. Cruising is understood to be walking and driving to areas known as ‘cruising grounds’, seeking sexual partners. They use sound, plaster, paint and light to create interactive installations
Using the dimensions of these spaces and their interior layout they create free standing sculptures and interactive soundscapes. These soundscapes attempt to map the space and plot the function of the sites as a historical
cruising ground.
Their work utilizes pressure pads made in the shape of other queer artists and friends who assisted in the development of their work. They use systems such as PureData and Arduino IDE which they use to track the movements of the
viewer activating the soundscapes.
Through these elements of this installation they point to the importance of individuals over architecture in the designation and creation of functions in queer spaces from the past and in the present.
