The images Callanan creates are real and direct extracts from the everyday world. The places we inhabit on a daily basis can often be overlooked. By wandering through a space and observing these everyday details, she considers what may otherwise be seen as boring or mundane as worth capturing.
Through the simple act of walking she engages with the urban environment using a psychogeographical approach. Her methodologies can be linked to that of The Situationists and their idea of a dérive (French word meaning ‘drift’) where one takes an unplanned journey through a landscape while being subconsciously guided by the surroundings with the aim of encountering a new experience.
By selecting and photographing fragments of her surroundings, Callanan explores the everyday as a space of attention. The main objective being to rediscover the very act of looking.
